Road Triping May 2012 | Daily Life
In May, I traveled to Hoxie and Grinell Kansas- near Hays, KS for those of you who haven't been there (which I realize is 99% of you) to visit family. My Aunt Marcia had an awesome time checking out the new restaurants in Hoxie, taking pictures, making cinnamon rolls, and going to her Sweet Adaline's practice in Colby. I also saw my first Elvis impersonator and got a kiss on the cheek and a lei. Check out the pic from back in the day of Marcia and I cooking. Thank you for showing me such a good time in Hoxie, Marcia!
An important part of this trip for me was to spend some time with my Grandpa. He had hip replacement surgery this year and while recovering in the hospital he turned 90 years old. I was so surprised to see how well he has recovered- still gardening and moving around like he had never broke a hip! We took a trip out to the land that used to be the family homestead until they moved the house into Hoxie in the 60's. He told me he purchased the land and house back in the day for $15,000. This man cannot sit still- we discovered that one of his mill's was not working properly so he trying to fix it. Even though I thought he should be taking it easy, that didn't stop him from climbing under fences and bending over to try and get the well working again. Grandpa- I hope I am half as strong as you are at 90.
Finally, I traveled to Grinell to see my Grandma on my Dad's side, Mildred. She is 93 and also in excellent health. While I was there, my father and step-mother, my Grandma and myself went to the very small towns of Angelus and Seguin. The Angelus church just celebrated it's 125 year anniversary and is also the place where both of my grandparents were married. My dad was an alter boy at the church and went to grade school in Seguin. Just for fun, I've included some pictures of my Grandma Mildred from 1938 and also the Angelus church- taken on May 5, 1918.
